What is Protein, And Why Do You Need It?

Protein, is made out of amino acids, which are linked together in chains. Amino acids are the principle means by which we get nitrogen -an essential element in your survival.

In order to build big and strong muscles you will need to achieve a positive protein balance. This means your body will have to make more protein than it will break. Of course, if you make less protein than your body breaks down ( negative protein balance), soon your muscles will become smaller and weaker.

How to measure protein balance?

Your protein balance can be estimated by measuring your nitrogen balance, since protein contains nitrogen. Having a positive nitrogen balance is generally taken as a sign of an anabolic (building muscles) state with an overall gain (retention) of nitrogen for the day, whereas a negative nitrogen balance indicates a catabolic (breaking muscles down) state.

Another way to keep track of your protein balance is by measuring your leucine balance. A positive balance of this amino acid shows protein anabolism. And as you are probably already guessing, a negative leucine balance suggests protein catabolism.

Simply said in order to have bigger muscles you need a positive protein balance. The way to know if you such a balance is to check if your nitrogen and/or leucine balances are positive.

How to maintain a positive protein balance?

As you know you can't eat all the time so there are gaps in protein intake such as when you are sleeping. So the question is how does your body maintain a positive balance when its not receiving any for such long periods.

Your body maintains its protein balance largely by adjusting tissue protein breakdown according to how much protein you feed it.

In between meals, you lose tissue protein, but after a good protein-containing meal, you recoup what you lost through a decrease in protein breakdown. In most cases the synthesis of tissue protein stays the same after the meal, yet because protein breakdown is reduced, the result is a gain in protein. This is protein balance. You don't gain muscles and you don't lose any.

In order to actually make your muscles bigger and stronger, you’ve got to work on both sides of the protein balance equation. However, the second side ( stimulation of protein synthesis ) is the most important side of the muscle-building equation. Indeed, the stimulation of muscle protein synthesis is the means by which resistance exercise makes muscles grow it’s also how some of the most powerful muscle-building hormones ( testosterone, HGH, insulin-like growth factor-1) do their job.

This makes picking out the best protein supplement a very important part of your bodybuilding efforts. There are many companies that claim their protein is the best, so be careful!

Acne In Adult People

In the post about acne myths I point out that most people think that adults don't suffer from acne. Thats a common misbelief with really bad results. People think they can just let acne cure it self with time and in most cases they are wrong, which leads to serious stress and lack of confidence in their life as adults.

There are several reasons for acne in adult people.

  1. Not treating acne in teenage years.
  2. Using tap water or other chlorinated chemicals.
  3. Pregnancy and menstrual period are often causing acne in adult women.
  4. The intake of steroids, anti-tuberculosis drugs, lithium, anti-epileptic drugs and medications that contain iodine.
  5. Skin pressure such as the one that a backpack applies can be a cause for acne.

As you see some causes are easy to avoid like the first 2. To treat acne read my post about The 2 Best Acne Treatment Products and to deal with the tap water you can use a basic water filtration system.

The other causes are a bit harder to avoid, I doubt that women will not get pregnant just because of acne or people will stop taking their anti-epileptic drugs for the same reasons... for those people and for the adults that already have acne once again I recommend reading the post about the 2 best acne treatment products by clicking on the link I gave earlier in this post.

Try to do what ever you can to avoid the reasons for acne in adult people we already spoke about, but don't get fanatic... And if you are one of those people who think that acne will cure itself with time, YOU ARE WRONG, please treat it!

In this post you will discover some interesting facts about the human muscles, but first I want to make sure you know, exactly what the muscles are. Basically they are the organs who allow us to move. They are made out of fibers. These fibers stretch and contract under the command of your brain. What holds the muscles to the bone is called tendon. When the muscles contract they pull the tendon, which pulls the bone and... you move.

Do you know that you have more than 640 muscles, which are separated in to two groups- Voluntary and Involuntary muscles

Voluntary are the muscles that you move whenever you want to do it, like your biceps for example.

Involuntary are the muscles that move without you thinking about it, like the heart. It contracts up to 80 times a minute and doesn't depend on whether you want it or not.

Now, when you know what muscles are, its time for the facts:

  1. The biggest muscle in the human body is the buttock muscle
  2. You use 17 muscles in order to smile, and 43 to frown
  3. When you move you use 200 muscles
  4. The strongest muscle in the human body is located in the jaw and its name is the the masseter muscle
  5. Your muscles are normally around 40-50% of your body weight
  6. Every half a kilo (1 lb) of muscle you gain, your body burns an extra 50 calories a day
  7. The fibers you already know about can support up to 1,000 times their own weight
  8. 75% of the muscle is water
  9. Producing the human speech takes 72 different muscles
  10. The human tongue consists of sixteen separate muscles, not one as many people think.
